Dendrigrafts
Highlight·April 2024
Open Edition

Dendrigrafts is a testament to the impermanence of human creations.

This work is the latest in a series of generative artworks by AutoEclectus that explores the use of a custom tree-growth algorithm to create organic, tree-like structures and emergent patterns. Each Dendrigraft beings with a host shape, upon which a network of tree nodes is grafted. These nodes have the capacity to grow and expand within carefully curated constraints, giving rise to branching patterns that mimic organic structures.

Just as the grand temples of Angkor Wat have been slowly swallowed by the jungle, the human-made shapes in these creations are being steadily consumed by the tendrils of the natural world. This invites us to reflect on the fragility of our own creations, and the inevitability of their eventual decline.

Voronoi Variegata
Highlight·January 2024
Open Edition

This work is a love letter to the Voronoi, nature’s most robust but delicate shape. A Voronoi pattern is a network of cells that occurs naturally in many plants and animals. It can also be seen in structures like honeycombs and bubbles. Widely used in computational geometry, it can be applied to model many different biological structures, from the micro architecture of bones, to cells, to growth patterns of forests and tree canopies.

In this work. some see plants, others cells, while others have a trypophobic aversion to what is being revealed. This work seeks to activate a connection back to nature that is within us all.

Perforations
FxHash·July 2023
100 Editions

Perforations is part of the Vertical Crypto Art Residency 6th Cohort Auction, 2023

Perforations is an exploration of time.

What if we found a set of ancient artefacts buried underground for unknown millennia? What are they? Who made them? What are they trying to tell us?

These artefacts have been somehow pierced, leaving behind holes in distinctive but unknown patterns. Their surfaces have been marked by the passage of time. Maybe the patterns are a message. Or a map. Or a clue.

Perforations explores the idea of communicating across vast time scales, where there is no common language between those who left the artefacts and those who found them.

The work invites us to imagine what information could have been so important that it needed to be recorded in this manner and left for future generations to discover.

Florilegium
FxHash·January 2023
200 Editions

Florilegium’s inspiration lies in the ancient art of botanical illustration.

Historically, a florilegium was an anthology of illustrations depicting exotic plants and creatures. These publications reached their peak in the 17th century, with notable examples such as Nehemiah Grew’s “Anatomy of Plants”, Ernst Haeckel’s “Kunstformen Der Natur” and Joseph Banks’ “Florilegium”. These publications have had a lasting impact on both science and art.

In this generative tribute to the ancient art of florilegia, imagined biomorphic forms compete for space in a garden based on the geometry of circles.

Dopamine Dreams

Dopamine is a chemical released in the brain that makes you feel good.

Dopamine Dreams is an exploration of using patterns and geometric forms to create something that also makes you feel good; to create something that feels natural, as if it has sprung from the ground or appeared in the sky.

In this work, there is a conversation happening between two modes for drawing the same grid. One is tight, geometric and calm. The other is loose, loopy and excited. They overlap, interlace and compete to fill the space. One cannot exist without the other. Balance is the the key. Between them they create a landscape in which to dream.

Kaibō
FxHash·September 2022
256 Editions

What would happen if we took the natural forms that surround us and dissected them into composable shapes?

Taking the organic world of Yashinoki, Kiabō dissects organic forms into composable elements, then reforms them into precise geometric arrangements. These shapes give way to random, organic growth the closer we look at them.
